A GIRL ORANGE

Layers upon layers of light,

stacked in the sky—

shades of peach and pink.

Call it dawn.

Call it anything you like.

Call it last night.

The twelve beers I sucked on,

sit hell in my stomach,

but I liked what I saw.

Morning’s first gasp

for breath, a night

of gritted teeth—

and all that was,

still there—

a girl orange

like it was Fall.

RED STAR

a red star on the bathroom floor

a sticker my son got from school

I remember how well-placed

my heart once was, and how long

it has been since it ever felt so well-placed

standing anywhere

now muscled

apart—a father picks up his son’s red star.
